Mountain Meru Tanzania, Greetings from the foothills of the fifth highest mountain in Africa, standing 4,562 meters and a neighbor of the Kilimanjaro, this is the Mount Meru.

Located on the northern part of the famous Arusha city, and just 70 kilometers from the West Side of Kilimanjaro mountain, Meru stands as the second highest mountain in Tanzania.

Surrounded by the Arusha national Park beneath it, Mount Meru becomes more unique from its brother Kilimanjaro as the wildlife adds the icing on the cake as you might be trekking beside various animals like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and colobus monkeys along the way.

First, the thing about Mt.Meru is that it’s not often covered with snow, Therefore this photo is not like many other photos you will see of this Mountain and that’s why today when I woke up and saw this, I wanted to tell you more about it.

Mount Meru  stands out against other mountains because it’s one of the few if not only mountain in Tanzania which you will climb while having the scenery of the vast African wildlife, on the first two days you will be trekking besides the animals you even dreamed to see, that’s why when climbing Mount Meru you will be accompanied by an armed ranger for safety.  As you climb the animals will be few and the forest will become less dense and you will start facing the rocky part of the mountain.

Being just close to the Kilimanjaro Mountain, when you get to the top of the Meru, you will have a clear view of the roof of Africa, the brother to Mt.Meru.

Climbing Mount Meru is said to give you a great experience and more solitary, as it has less crowd compared to Kilimanjaro, but also climbing any mountain acts as a challenge to conquer it, Meru will you give you more challenge and unique adventure  more than many you have came across.

Others use this as a warm up for climbing the Kilimanjaro, it might seem expensive and unnecessary but it can avoid you the cost of retrying to climb the Kilimanjaro on first attempt, it will give your body some experience on what you will face.

4 Days  Itinerary – Climbing Mountain Meru:

Mount Meru features multiple distinct climate zones as you ascend. On the lower slopes of the mountain and inside the park, there is a good chance of spotting wildlife. The trail follows the north rim of the crater, along a dramatic ridgeline. Once you reach the summit, you will see incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater itself.

During the hike, accommodations are in mountain huts along the hiking trail. Comfortable lodge accommodations will be included on the night after your hike.

Sample Itinerary :

Day 1: Momela gate to Miriakamba Hut (8,500 ft)

Drive from Arusha to Momela gate where the hiking starts here. Lunch on the trail and Dinner will be served at the hut. (Overnight at Miriakamba Hut)

DAY 2: Miriakamba hut to Saddle Hut (11,500 ft)

This morning after breakfast, you will leave Miraakamba heading to Saddle hut. Lunch will be on the trail and dinner at the hut. If time allows, we can climb Little Meru and see a spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro and a bit more acclimatization. (Overnight at Saddle Hut)

DAY 3: Saddle Hut to Mirikamba Hut

This morning around 3:00am you will start ascent to the summit and back to Saddle hut for breakfast and lunch and later on, will descend to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight. (Overnight at Miriakamba Hut)

DAY 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momela gate

After breakfast you will leave Miriakamba and descend to Momela gate where you will meet with you driver guide and transfer to the lodge.
